The Young Men’s Christian Association or YMCA, a historical landmark in Springfield in its own right, is deeply rooted in this community, having supported the physical, health, programmatic and social needs of this community as well as that of surrounding area communities for the last 135 years.

Kathleen Heyworth
History fascinates Kathleen Heyworth.  For the past year and half, she has conducted research on Camp Butler during the Civil War. “I grew up in this area, and I’m amazed that I had no idea it was a prisoner of war camp and a training camp,” she says.  Now she often finds herself digging in the dirt on a friend’s property near the camp and unearthing treasures.

Mike Farmer
Michael Farmer, the Director of Springfield’s Office of Planning and Economic Development, oversees a twenty-four million dollar budget committed to improving the quality of life for Springfield residents and the local business environment. He is responsible for promoting business expansion and employment, attracting new investment, maintaining and improving Springfield’s neighborhoods, encouraging and supporting home ownership, and protecting and preserving the city’s historic infrastructure. His job requires economic expertise, engineering and architectural knowledge, and political savy.

Timothy Rowles
Timothy Rowles, Executive Director of The Springfield Project and the Black Chamber of Commerce, is an Alabama native, but has spent his adult life in Springfield, Illinois, arriving here with his parents for his senior year at Springfield High School. He was part of the Youth Employment Program then which he says helped lock him into a job right away after school.
