The newly formed Capital City Chapter of “Fishing Has No Boundaries” (FHNB) will hold their first annual fishing event for people with disabilities on September 30, 2017.   As a national not for profit organization, Fishing Has No Boundaries is comprised of 28 chapters in 13 states.  The organization’s mission is to make the outdoors accessible to all, regardless of disability or age.

The local chapter of FHNB was put together by Mary Ann and Jeff Gebauer with their son Joseph.  They found inspiration to start this local chapter after visiting Jeff’s brother and support him as volunteers at Antioch Illinois’ FHNB event.  After experiencing how much fun and joy the participants and volunteers had that day, they knew a similar event in Springfield would provide many people with a life affirming experience they would look forward to time and again.

The event will be comprised of a full day of fishing on Lake Springfield hosted by the Island Bay Yacht Club.  32 participants with disabilities will spend the day on the water fishing through the use of donated boats and volunteer fishing partners.  Breakfast, lunch, and dinner will be provided.  The event will conclude with an award ceremony to recognize each participant’s accomplishments.

Fishing Has No Boundaries’ goal is to provide for the needs of disabled people and allow them to experience the joy of the outdoors, to provide a worry free day of outdoor activity and comradery that helps fulfill the participant’s needs for a positive self-image, independence, and a genuine feeling of accomplishment.  This event would not be possible without a vast number of volunteers and sponsors.
