The Illinois Symphony Orchestra announces the appointment of Ken Lam as Music Director effective July 1, 2017. Mr. Lam emerged with unanimous support of the ISO’s Board of Directors and Search Committee, musicians, audience members, and communities in an extensive search process lasting two years with four experienced candidates conducting the orchestra in the 2016-2017 season.
“From a field of four world class conductors, one has emerged who has excited our musicians, our audience and our board.  We are pleased to welcome Maestro Ken Lam to lead the Illinois Symphony Orchestra as it begins its 25th anniversary season,” says Roger Hunt, Board Member of the ISO’s Board of Directors and Search Committee Co-Chair.
“I am very honored to become the next Music Director of the ISO. When I worked with the orchestra this past season, I was struck by the quality of the music making and the dedication of the musicians, the staff, the board and all of the symphony’s supporters. I look forward to joining the ISO family and making beautiful music for both communities,” states Mr. Lam.
“Ken Lam was a clear favorite with the orchestra. He brings enthusiasm, musical knowledge, conducting skill, and a friendly and engaging manner to the podium. The musicians thoroughly enjoyed our concerts with Ken this past season and are eager to begin our collaboration. We look forward to continuing to build on what we have achieved the past five years,” said flutist Amanda Pond, a search committee member and ISO musician.
Board Member of the ISO’s Board of Directors and Search Committee Co-Chair Milt Sees added, “Ken Lam emerged from a field of four very talented and gifted candidates who provided our audiences with outstanding programs during the past season. I am sure Maestro Lam will maintain the high standards the ISO is known for, and will possibly mix in a few surprises along the way. Do not miss opening night!”
Executive Director Trevor Orthmann stated, “The musicians and staff of the ISO are excited to begin working with Mr. Lam to energize and unite our central Illinois communities through the many performances and programs the Symphony provides throughout the year.”
