Our HomeScene section features a 72-year old home on Lake Springfield. Richard and Kay King own it. Rich says the beauty of the house and its landscaping makes it hard to go to work. Robyn Bouillon takes us on a tour of the home in her commentary and Terry Farmer’s photography accents the exterior and interior of the home. The Kings visited other Dutch Colonial homes in New England before making improvements to the house.
Enjoy reading about the King’s home and what they have done to it to make it one of the most admired houses on the lake.
We have a number of interesting profiles for your reading pleasure. Rod and Rosemary Buffington are devoted art aficionados. They are art educators and have devoted their lives to teaching and improving art.
Bill Stokes has their profiles. Rod is involved in many community activities including the Rotary clubs, while Rosemary teaches art at New Berlin High School. They have made many contributions to the local arts community.
Another active person in the community is Tammy Gillette who is with the local chapter of the American Heart Association. Tammy has worked for other charity organizations but says she enjoys working somewhere where you can measure your results. She has been Corporate Events Director for the Association since 2003 and is an ambassador for the Springfield Chamber of Commerce. Tammy enjoys meeting and talking with new people and that is a plus in her job. She is certainly raising health awareness as Dawn Boyer explains in her profile of Tammy.
While we’re on the subject of health care, be sure to read Dr. Jim Dove’s column on Health Care Reform: Reform or Politics? It’s a timely commentary on the subject that is now being debated in congressional committees.
Chris Hembrough is devoting his life to helping others. A football star at Griffin High School and the University of Miami, Chris returned to Springfield, bought a business, went into the ministry and is now head of the Big Brother/Big Sister program. As Edward Russo points out, in his profile of Hembrough, Chris is involved in programs that lend a hand to those in need.
Flynn Hanners knocked around in radio in his early years, but found that working for radio stations in Memphis, Denver, St. Louis and other markets didn’t satisfy him. Since childhood Hanners wanted to be a policeman. Finally he came to Springfield and joined the Illinois State Police, where he remains today. In his off time, Hanners has become known as “Mr. Muni”. And the Muni Opera is where Lisa Rigoni found Hanners for her interview with him. Flynn has put his radio talent to work starring in some Muni productions and other theatre presentations in the Springfield area. He is now head of the Muni organization.
Paris Cleaners is celebrating its 100th anniversary in Springfield this year. Lisa Rigoni interviewed the co-presidents, the fourth generation brothers, Shep and C. David Franke.
In her Business Scene piece, Lisa points out that the company has remained in the Franke family for a century and some of the values taught by the founder of the cleaners’ remains with the company to this day. It’s an interesting profile of an organization that worked hard and has remained a success over the years.
In the other Business Scene, we learn from Dawn Boyer what it takes to make a successful advertising agency. Dawn profiles GM Anderson & Associates in her profile of Pat Anderson who, with his father the late Guy Anderson, founded the agency in 1986.
Read how the creative juices flow through the staff at the agency in Dawn’s “small agency, BIG RESULTS”_ piece.
We also have a couple of TravelScenes for you. Shelley Lamatia and a group of Robert Morris University students went to Italy on an extended tour this summer and they have produced two pieces on their experiences. We hope you will enjoy reading them.
