M. G. Nelson Family Gallery at the SAA

The Springfield Art Association is excited to present the exhibition, “Seeking An Upward Thermal”. Birds seek rising pockets of warming air, soaring upwards on the current. These thermals lift and support flight. Like these avian aerialists, the artists seek their own upward thermal.

This three-woman show is uniquely interactive and ideal for all ages. The three artists present more than 50 interpretations in pastel, gouache, and beadwork sculpture. A multi-sensory experience fills the gallery with sound and color. Artworks link to digital bird calls from caws to trills. The show consists of three series: A Hollow-boned Muse by Roberta Condon with 20 figurative paintings in pastel allowing us to escape to the restorative and magical interplay of humans with birds. At Home with Birds, Lorraine Ortner-Blake presents 20 paintings in gouache depicting birds as enshrined icons representing our natural liaison between earth and sky. Endangered Species II: The Raven Cries, Debra Grall presents 10 works in beaded sculpture portraying the Raven warning of past and future extinction of birds if we do not care for the earth.

The exhibition will be in the M. G. Nelson Family Gallery on the main campus of the Springfield Art Association at 700 North 4th Street, from May 2 through the 31st. The Artist’s Reception will be on Sunday, May 4th from 2 to 4 PM with the Artist’s Talk at 3 PM. Regular gallery hours are Monday through Friday 9 AM to 5 PM and Saturday 10AM to 3 PM. The gallery is free and open to public.
