The Lincoln Land Community College student newspaper, The Lamp, won 13 journalism awards in the recent statewide Awards for Excellence in Illinois Community College Newspapers competition. The awards were presented April 6 during the Illinois Community College Journalism Association conference held at LLCC.

The Lamp staff won first place for its website, first and third place awards for front page design, and third place for general excellence. The Lamp’s editor-in-chief is Zach Aiello of Chatham, managing editor is Avery Cook of Rochester and assistant editor is Niko Robledo of Springfield.

“Winning first place for website was very satisfying. They upgraded the website and worked hard to make sure new content was available daily,” says Tim McKenzie, professor of journalism and humanities and The Lamp advisor. “These awards are just a sampling of the great work that a very active group of student journalists created. I am very proud of all their work.”

Other awards included:

Gracie Schweighart of Springfield won first and third place awards for sports news.

Isaac Warren of Springfield won second place awards in news story and page design and third place in graphics.

Second place awards also went to S.E. Black of Springfield for cartoon and Jacob Schmedeke of Taylorville for news column.

Andrew Paisley of Taylorville won third place for news story.

Jack Pugh of Stonington received honorable mention for sports column.
