The Animal Protective League (APL) will distribute free dog food to pet owners in need this Sunday, May 20, at the shelter located at 1001 Taintor Rd., Springfield. APL is able to share this holiday bounty with pet owners due to a generous dog food donation from the community. The dog food will be distributed free of charge from 1 p.m. until 3p.m. (or while supplies last) on a first come, first served basis. Other items will be available as well such as dog beds, dog clothes, and dog and cat treats as well. Proof of economic status is not required, but those wishing to receive a donation should bring ID with them. Donations are for individuals or families only. Distributions cannot be made to businesses or organizations.
APL operates a Pet Food Bank year-round at the shelter. The Pet Food Bank is made possible through donations of food from individuals and businesses and helps to ensure that all pets have access to food. Pet owners may contact the shelter at 217-544-PETS (7387) to get more information. Last year, APL’s Pet Food Bank distributed over 12 tons of food to dogs and cats in need.
APL is a non-profit organization committed to caring for sick, injured, abused and abandoned dogs and cats and finding the best possible permanent homes for them.  In addition to regular pet adoptions, the organization coordinates cruelty investigations and humane education programs and operates a low cost spay/neuter clinic adjacent to its Springfield shelter. All animals adopted out have been spayed or neutered, received all age appropriate vaccination, and have been microchipped. For more information on APL, please visit our website at www.apl-shelter.org.
