Heartworm prevention is best for dogs. Unfortunately strays do not have access to preventive heartworm medicine. Often these dogs end up in shelters and if diagnosed positive for heartworm may be euthanized.
Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine has a new protocol for Heartworm Positive Dogs, it involved two drugs, Advantage Multi for dogs and doxycycline.
